| Lucifer's Pearl Reviews GH: Aerosmith Edition |
Wed Jul 02, 2008 2:49 pm |

So being the huge miniature guitar fan that I am of course I went and got this game the first day it was available... and being the nerd I am I demolished it in the first night. So here's the run down. There are some really great songs on this expansion set. For instance "Sex Type Thing by STP" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett". There's a link at the bottom for a full track list. But I have to say that I am dissappointed with some of the songs that are the Aerosmith featured songs. Or rather I should say that there would be some other songs that I would have liked to have seen on the set list. For instance "Crazy", "Same Old Song and Dance", "(Dude) Looks Like a Lady", "Janie's Got a Gun", "Cryin", and "Falling in Love (is hard on the knees)". But I am willing to over look that because granted it is a guitar game so therefore songs with complicated guitar tracks are the picks. But there are some real wonders on the song list... enough to diswarrant my theory.
OK WHAT THE HELL IS RUN DMC DOING IN GUITAR HERO!!! No... bad... grrrrrrrrrrr. I understand "Walk this way" but no they have their own song too. PLUS he's an unlockable character in all his early nineties glory. All I can say is thank god the but the non-covered version of the song in the game store so it can be purchased. BUT they also put "Pink" in the purchase category which I think should have been in the campaign but whatever... once it's unlocked who cares.
One of my big gripes is that the last 2 encore songs are the downloadable content aerosmith songs that came out for GH3 earlier this year. I think that's a little crappy when the last song you have to beat you've already played a million times. And even though it's an expansion there are still only 30 some odd songs on the thing. Which in my opinion makes it a little expensive for that short of a game. I would also like to know who yelled at the guys making the games because this expansion is significantly easier than its predecessor. I can not for the love of all that is good beat "Slayer" on hard but yet I was able to beat all of this edition on hard (including a battle) without failing once... without going yellow once. And yes I maybe better than average on this game but I am not that good. So tonight I will attempt it on expert and tell you how it goes.
So here's the final verdict. I would still have bought Aerosmith edition (mainly because I want to have all the guitar hero and rockband crap that' available) but I would have gladly shelled out the same amount of cash on xbox live for this content and been equally as happy with an expanded acheivement list and I WOULD NOT HAVE TO CHANGE FREAKIN' DISCS EVERYTIME I WANT TO PLAY RAGDOLL & PINK!!!

| Prestige NOW! Double Xp weekend! |
Fri Jun 06, 2008 9:44 am |
 From http://iamfourzerotwo.com/
----------------- THANK YOU to everyone who consistently continues to play the game every night!! To show our appreciation, as always we’re going to be holding a Double XP Weekend this weekend starting Friday morning and going till Monday (yes I know… we always say that, but we’re really going to cut it off at Monday this time… maybe).
The Double XP will be available in ALL PLAYLISTS and will be on both platforms Xbox 360 and PS3!
In addition, we will be tweaking all the playlist map rotations a bit so that the Variety Map Pack no longer shows up 2:1 to old maps. Therefore all maps (old and new) have an equal chance to come up in map rotation, so you won’t be seeing Chinatown pop up 8,000 times or any other new map over and over again.
Thanks again to EVERYONE who continues to support the game and keep it at the top of the charts. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the COD4 T-shirt designs we’re working on and let us know which ones we should get printed up, because we’ll be giving away a lot of them to our loyal players when we do as well as making them available to you on the new Infinityward.com Online store that will launch in late June with the new site.
See you online!-------------------------
All of you Five Star Hold outs, It's time to Prestige! I plan on flipping twice this weekend. Double XP is the way to go. WOOT! |

| Call of Duty 4 (Xbox360): Clueless about Clans |

Call of Duty 4 May 30th, 2008

Karmus has finally joined the ranks of Criminal Gaming! He is quite the wordsmith. Check out this recent article that he submitted, and won 2nd place!, for a writing contest at COD4SOURCE
Linky: http://cod4source.com/call-of-duty-4-xb ... bout-clans ________________________________________________________________
I would readily classify myself as a gamer. I’ve been playing long enough to have my own magic blowing technique to get those pesky NES cartridges to work on the first try. I’ve sunk an untold amount of hours into “pwning nubs” on de_dust2, while having a laugh (and a few drinks) over Ventrilo. I’ve even ventured into the depths of Molten Core to take my shot at some epic loot. Rarely has there been a game that I could even remotely classify as perfect, but despite the inherent flaws, its that unconditional love that makes me a true gamer. What upsets me, however, is when a game can be perfect, it has the potential, but for whatever reason it falls short because of what I can only assume to be laziness. Call of Duty 4 just so happens to be one of these games.
The first time I cracked the crisp wrapper on my COD:4 package on Christmas morning to stare slightly slack-jawed at the awe inspiring graphics, I knew this could be one of those game. The controls were intuitive; not overly complicated but still with enough functionality to get the job done. The graphics, especially for a game so reliant on the multiplayer scenario, are tough to compete with. The matchmaking, even though it had some hitches off the bat, was smoothed out over time making for a relatively painless and expedited process. Needless to say, I was immediately drawn in by the game.
For the first few weeks everything was coming up roses. I was meeting, chatting, and horsing around with everyone and anyone who would entertain my wild extrapolations over voice chat. My friends (real life) and I were able to play together without much fuss, and the friends I made online were easily integrated into our roving band of gypsies. The game was, dare I say, fun. At this point, after I had sufficiently learned the maps to my liking, my friends and I decided perhaps it was time to take it to that next level, the making of a clan.
I had seen the Clan Tag selection staring me longingly in the face since it changed from that ominous grey to that oh-so-inviting white when I hit the right level. I had wanted to mess around with it, to taste its forbidden fruits, but I reprimanded myself, always saying that now was the not the right time. Finally I was allowed to indulge and affix my loyalties to the front of my name. After having decided on the appropriate clan tag, Dingles or [dngl] for short, I hastily entered it in with a sense of finality that one usually reserves for death or marriage. We had selected our banner, and proudly let it fly. That is until we entered the next game, and through some untold ancient evil and sorcery, some heathen had divined our clan tag and wore it mockingly into battle. “Certainly this can not be allowed to stand,” I declared defiantly into my microphone. Whenever I am troubled, much as I was in this situation, I flee to my sanctum, the interweb. Furiously typing I searched the depths of the internet in hope of gleaning some nugget of information to enlighten me about the sacrilege I had just witnessed. It is at this moment when the flawless exterior of the game I had come to love began to crack and flake off, revealing below its true hideous nature.
The Clan Tag functionality was nothing more than an afterthought it would seem. In hindsight I am sure it was added to do the very thing it had done to me, fool you into a sense of completeness that one could readily get lost in. Not being derived from the internet itself, but rather fed to us through some proxy (Xbox live), perhaps Activision and its subsidiaries took for granted those little things that make the internet so great. Forums, IRC, and Ventrilo are add-ons for games, not derived from the makers themselves, but still very much present in the game design and implementation process. “So what if we have a crap in-game voice communication system, it’s not like they use it anyway,” the PC division thinks to itself. “Our Clan system is merely a façade, but its ok, them internet boys will be able to work something out.” This type of thinking is poisonous in the game development process because all platforms are not created equal in this regard.
Those of you who play the PC version of COD:4 are hopefully lucky enough to not have to understand what it is I am talking about. You have ancillary means of making up for the shortcomings of the game designers because of the machines you employ. On the Xbox360 we are slaves to their whims and designs. Without the ability to access forums or third party communication programs we are stuck with what they have deemed sufficient. What this does is cripple the “clan” aspect of the game. Without means of proper organization, delegation, and communication clans might as well as be renamed communals. The inability to enforce your clan tag makes them useless. What is the point of creating a clan with the intent of seeking renown if some schmuck can don your banner and sully your good name.
When I have voiced this grievance in the past, people have told me to suck it up and just use my computer for all that which the Xbox falls short of. I find this argument repugnant. You mean to tell me that I spent $450 on a wonder machine, spend $7.99 a month to be able to access a completely commercialized and twisted “internet,” and they don’t have enough bandwidth to host a freaking forum over Xbox Live? That would be like buying a television, and then the cable company saying that you have to buy a different television to be able to watch TV on the new one.
Enough complaining I suppose, I’ve kind of wore myself out there. After all of this I just want to point out that Activision, Xbox, and Call of Duty 4 missed something, something big. They missed making a complete game, which is rare by any standard. The game has no problems luring people in, but sustained replay value wavers without an efficient clan system. Prestige is a failed attempt to introduce something to make players keep coming back, another afterthought, but I can’t fault them for this one, it sort of makes sense. I suppose in our parallel dimension, where everything ends up as it should have been, my other half is playing COD4 till the wee hours of the morning, laughing it up with his comrades and clanmates. I just wish I could do the same.

---------------------------------------
Is it too soon to be all over myself for Gears of War 2? I have been fighting off the urge to read, grab, and breath all things Gears for several months. More and more tidbits are becoming full fledged showcases of the game. Here are some of the officially leaked highlights I am STOKED about.

-----------------------------------
List of Juicy GoW2 Details from X360 Magazine
Ten person, 5v5 online multiplayer.
Yes, Gears of War 2 will have a Halo-style matchmaking system.
There will be respawning multiplayer modes, but the focus is still towards traditional non-respawn gaming.

Multiplayer game modes:
- "Guardian" game mode: A remade version of Gears' Assassination game mode where the objective is still to kill the other team's leader, but players keep respawning as long as their leader is alive. Opponents' leader will be marked on the HUD to keep the game moving along.
- "Wingman" game mode: You and a buddy team up, sharing a single character model in this five teams of two game mode.
- "Meatflag" game mode: A CTF-style mode where the "flag" is actually an AI-controlled player who'll wander the map and attempt to kill anyone who gets near. To "capture" him, you'll have to first down, then escort him as a meatshield all the way back to your base, all while your opponents are trying to kill you and shoot at the "flag". Because, if shot at enough, your meatshield flag will break free, go berserk and deal out the pain. Respawning will be featured in this game mode as well as stats for the amount of kills the AI-controlled flag dished out

Multiplayer maps:
- Around a dozen maps will be included on disc.
- "Gridlock": A remake of the Gridlock we've all come to know and love, but taken over by vegetation, old age and now featuring a beautiful sun-setting glow.
- "River": Symmetrical map featuring a house and a sniper tower separated by (you guessed it) a river.
- "Security": A long, thin map with "verandas" on each side that are sealed off by red laser bars. In the center of the map is a button to deactivate all the security for roughly 20 seconds.

Weapons: - Players will have the option of spawning with the chainsaw-equipped Lancer or the newly modified Locust Hammerburst. - "Scorcher" weapon: A flamethrower that we're promised will produce some uber-realistic fire. - "Medusa" weapon: A new Locust pistol that is said to be extremely powerful, pumping out five to six rounds per shot downing enemies in a few shots. Said to be the perfect compliment to a meatshielder. - "Hammerburst" weapon: Changed a bit, now requiring players to pump the trigger as fast as possible (think Halo 3's Carbine). Though, recoil will increase the faster it's fired.
Grenades: - Can be stuck to people, walls, the floor and any other surface to be used as a makeshift proximity mine. - As before, players will spawn with one smoke grenade. - Smoke grenade: Now carries a "stun" effect that "ragdolls any player within their blast radius". - Poison gas grenade: Spews poison that will kill anyone who lingers in its poisonous cloud.
Chainsaw Duels: - Whoever does the quickest amount of "B" button tapping will be victorious. - Your teammates can help give you an edge in the duel by shooting the opponent which will give you the upper hand on the "B" button mini-game. - No duel will occur if a player is chainsawed from behind. Instead, the sexy "butt to head" chainsaw animation will kick in giving the attacker and instant kill.
Once killed in a non-respawn game, players will enter a "dynamic battle-cam" that floats above the action.
Also available (when dead) will be a Ghost Cam where players can view the action from the battlefield and take screenshots that can be uploaded online similar to Halo 3.
Development on Gears 2 is roughly at 65% complete.
Don't count on Call of Duty 4 style XP or perks, Cliff says they will not be adding these types of character building elements to the Gears universe.
 ---------------------------------------

I'm drooling over the Meatflag gametype and the variety of grenades. The new finishing moves sound like an upgrade, I am skeptical that the new weapons will wow me.
The thing that gets me pee-in-my-pants excited?? The use of a battlefield cam to take the screenshots and films. Not only was this the one thing I LOVED about Halo 3, it is a huge help when playing competitively.
But again I ask.... is it too soon? We still have a whole summer and fall of game releases to get through before this drops. My hope is that these are small pieces of the whole puzzle, and they have much much more to reveal.
